Workers In Sawmills, Mining Firms Exposed To High Pungent Chemicals At High Risk Of Getting Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the most diagnosed cancer, worldwide. 

Lung cancer occurs when cells multiply abnormally in the lungs and form a malignant tumor. 

Along with previous lung disease or smoking tobacco, lung cancer can also be linked to environmental factors, such as exposure to radon and air pollution. 

As the world commemorate lung cancer today on the theme,: ‘Close the Care Gap’ which is about understanding the iniquities in cancer care and taking actions to make the necessary process to address them.

Dr Slyvester Fameye, a medical doctor at the Grace Mission Hospital explained that lung cancer is a cancer which affect the lungs.

He reveals the two types of lung cancer being the large cell lung cancer and the small cell lung cancer. Dr Fameye said, the small cell lung cancer is the most aggressive.

The treatment of the cancer, he said, is done at the tertiary hospital which are not easily accessible by Ghanaians. The challenge, according to him, is the inadequate specialists found in these health centers.

Again, Dr Fameye disclosed that the disease is common among cigarette smokers and that smokers increase their chance of developing lung cancer.

“About 60 per cent of those who get lung cancer are chronic long term smokers,” He said.
