Western North Minister charges new DCEs to tackle illicit mining

Two new District Chief Executives (DCEs) have been confirmed in the Sefwi Bodi and Sefwi Akontombra Districts in the Western North Region.

Stephen Baidoo has been appointed to lead the Bodi District, while Joseph Appiah will head the Sefwi Akontombra District.

Speaking at a confirmation ceremony, Western North Regional Minister Hon. Willbert Petty Bretum congratulated the newly appointed DCEs and emphasized the need to tackle illegal mining, or galamsey, a significant security concern in the region.

He emphasized that the President has issued a stern warning to government appointees, emphasizing that involvement in illegal mining will result in severe consequences.

”The DCEs must go all out to tackle this menace while also promoting responsible small-scale mining,” Hon. Bretum stated. “Licensed operators must adopt best practices to distinguish themselves from illegal miners who are destroying our forests and water bodies.”

The minister emphasized that tackling illegal mining will be a major challenge for the newly appointed district chief executives and urged them to remain resolute and committed in their efforts to address this issue.

The DCE for Bodi, Hon. Stephen Baidoo, delivered an acceptance speech filled with gratitude and optimism. He thanked Assembly Members for their overwhelming support, acknowledging the trust they’ve placed in him. Baidoo also highlighted the vast potential of Bodi District’s residents, emphasizing the importance of unity in driving development and progress.

“My administration will focus on improving education, healthcare, agriculture, employment, infrastructure, and security,” Mr. Baidoo said.

He recognized his predecessor’s efforts and committed to expanding on their accomplishments.

The new DCE for Akontombra, Joseph Appiah, expressed his commitment to driving development in the district despite the numerous challenges facing the district. He highlighted several uncompleted projects from the previous administration that remain key concerns, including poor roads, inadequate healthcare facilities, and school infrastructure.

He emphasized the significance of the District Assembly Common Fund as a vital source of development funding. Notably, a portion of this fund has been allocated to procuring DRIP equipment, with the cost to be deducted over time.

Mr. Appiah vowed to drive development across the district, urging citizens to join him in this endeavor with unwavering dedication and collective effort.
