Sek/T’di-National security operations discover ECG meters and cables in bush

National Security operatives in Ghana’s Western Region have made a significant discovery, uncovering stacks of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) equipment at two sites in Kansaworado, a suburb of Sekondi-Takoradi.

This finding is part of an ongoing investigation into the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to ECG at the Tema Port.

The operatives found seven drums of fiber and aluminum cables stored at an uncompleted building in the area. Further investigation revealed approximately 100 boxes of single-phase meter enclosures, packs of electrical switches, and other electrical tools.

Further investigation into the discovered ECG equipment revealed that MBH Power had released the stock to Hegmic Co. Ltd for electrification works under the Loss Reduction Program (LRP) of the ECG.

Evans Lartey, a supervisor with MBH Power, stated during interrogation that the company has documentation covering the equipment in question.

“I have documentation for this. We started this project around August 2023,” he said.

Asked who supervises his work, Mr. Lartey replied; “we have the District Technical Officers, the District Managers and the Regional Manager of the ECG being aware of this.”

A second site, an undeveloped plot of land near a private residence, was found to contain a substantial amount of electrical materials. The site held 41 full drums of aluminum cables and five used cables, along with bundles of angle iron bars, discarded in the bush.

Authorities are currently trying to identify the owner of the site or the individual responsible for storing the materials there.

Hashem Tanko Nuhu of the National Security disclosed they had been instructed to confiscate the items for further investigation.

“Our Regional National Security Coordinator will call our head office in Accra for further instructions. We will call ECG to the table. As at now, no body has owned up to this. We’ve spoken to some residence here, but they seem not to know actual owners of the items. We are yet to even establish whoever owns this parcel of land,” he added.

On the matter of MBH Power, Mr. Nuhu says the responses as offered by the supervisor is dissatisfactory adding that “the problem we have is how those items got to a private residence.”

A source within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has confirmed the company’s contractual relationship with MBH Power under the Loss Reduction Program. However, the source declined to comment on the specifics of the operational procedures, including the storage of electrical supplies at private residences.
