Government to review Free SHS and other Flagship Programs

All 16 flagship programmes of government including the Free Senior High School policy are up for review. This is according to Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

It is one of the many decisions taken at a crunch Cabinet meeting, to proffer solutions to the economic hardships in the country. There have been calls for the government to cut down on its expenditure and review the Free SHS Policy to cater for the less privileged alone, in the face of the current economic downturn.

Speaking on an Accra based radio station- Citi, Mr Oppong Nkrumah said all the 16 flagship programmes are up to be looked at.

He said President Akufo-Addo has directed that the flagship programmes should be protected and fully implemented to ensure that the impact is achieved. The information minister said the caveat by the President is to not compromise on the fiscal consolidation agenda.

Meanwhile, the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta is expected to provide details on measures for tackling challenges facing the economy.

This is after consultations with key social and economic stakeholders, following a Cabinet decision on some new measures including cuts that are to affect all major government flagship programmes as well as other areas of the economy.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Information on Monday, March 21, 2022, it was explained that in addition to the scheduled appraisal of the performance of government programmes, Cabinet also extensively discussed the impact of global economic difficulties on Ghana and the Ghanaian people.

It said the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will provide the details of measures later this week after consultations with key social and economic stakeholders.

“Government appreciates the efforts of all who contributed to a successful retreat and looks forward to the support of all Ghanaians,” it added.
