The Ministry of education in collaboration with Zoom-lion Ghana limited has commenced disinfection and fumigation of Senior High Schools in the Western Region.
This is aimed at mitigating the negative impact of bed bugs and other bacteria on the various campuses in the region as well as to complement government efforts against the spread of COVID-19
The exercise started on Friday at 8am at the Saint John’s School and simultaneously took place in other 7 senior high schools in the Metropolis.
A total of 79 schools are expected to benefit from the initiative in the Western Region out of which 17 are targeted in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis.
Alhaji Abdua Abdullaih, Western Region’s general manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited in an exclusive interview with Spice Fm 91.9 said that the exercise is complementing government’s effort towards the fight against COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure that the discomfort brought by bed bugs, viruses and other bacteria on the various campus is eliminated.
“We are all aware of the COVID-19 pandemic, aside it, we also have a problem of bed bugs in most of our secondary schools. The dormitories classrooms blocks and dining halls have all been fumigated and disinfected. The target is the bed bugs and other vectors and ones this is done then we also look at the virus and germs. We have two chemicals including pesticides and chlorine solution for bacteria and virus respectively. We expect that students will feel comfortable when they return to school”.
The assistant headmaster of Saint Johns School, Mr. Francis ofori siaw, lauded the initiative and was of the view that the exercise will improve teaching and learning on the campus as students will now breathe a sign of relief from all forms of bacteria and viruses.
“Obviously this is a very significant in the sense that the bed bug menace is a national issue and definitely a school campus where vigorous academic work takes place, it’s an uncomfortable situation. It will be a sigh of relief if the exercise is effectively done and the bed buds are completely eradicated, it will improve teaching and learning therefore impacting positively on the academic work of the students”.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has partnered waste management giant, Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, for a nationwide fumigation and disinfection exercise that will cover both public and private second-cycle institutions across the country.
