Pet tigers remain in Ghanaian businessman’s home despite Accra court order for removal

A dispute over two tigers in Accra continues as they remain caged on a property despite a court order for their removal.

Businessman Nana Kwame Bediako imported the tigers with the intention of showcasing non-native wildlife, but neighbors, particularly Pamela Agba, expressed concerns about feeling unsafe due to the animals’ presence.

According to Agba, “My family and I feel very unsafe and terrified any time we see these tigers.”

Originally brought in as cubs from Dubai, the tigers have now grown, prompting discomfort among residents.

Bediako defended his actions, describing the import as an “achievement” and emphasizing that he followed proper procedures and installed a safety cage to prevent public danger.

The conflict escalated when Agba took legal action, which drew significant attention in the country.

The court sided with Agba, directing the Forestry Commission to remove the tigers within three days.

However, the Commission sought extensions, citing the need for Bediako to construct a new enclosure in a different area away from residences to house the tigers.

Bediako, seeking more time, explained that the process of securing land and building a suitable facility took several months.

He stressed the importance of ensuring the animals’ safety and expressed concerns that any forced relocation could harm the tigers or pose risks to society.

The Forestry Commission’s delay in removal, possibly due to lacking expertise in handling such animals, led to legal repercussions, with the head of the Commission found in contempt of court.

Despite some residents reportedly moving out because of the tigers, Bediako highlighted that other residents in his complex had not raised concerns.

Agba expressed her desire for closure on the matter, stating her frustration at constantly encountering the tigers near her home.

She emphasized her wish for the entire issue to be resolved.
