Presidential Jet unserviceable due to major technical faults – Defence Minister

The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has revealed that Ghana’s presidential jet, the Dassault Falcon 900EX EASY, is currently out of service due to serious technical issues.

Dr. Boamah explained that critical components of the aircraft have been severely corroded, rendering it unsafe for use by the President, Vice President, and other senior government officials. He also noted that efforts to repair the jet have faced setbacks, primarily due to difficulties in acquiring the necessary spare parts.

Responding to a question in Parliament regarding the status of the aircraft, Dr. Boamah stated:
“Ghana’s presidential jet is nearly 15 years old and has developed widespread, significant corrosion—including in key structural areas. This aircraft is a national asset used not only by the President and Executive, but at times by members of the Legislature and other state institutions. Unfortunately, as repairs progress, more defects continue to be discovered.

One of the most serious issues was the heavy corrosion of the turbofan, which required a full replacement. Initially, the manufacturer had no spare turbofans available due to limited production, which is common for aging technology. After extensive negotiations, a replacement part was eventually sourced and installed. However, we cannot guarantee the future availability of additional spare parts should new faults arise.”

The aircraft has been undergoing a comprehensive 24-month or 1,600 flight-hour inspection at a facility in Le Bourget, France, since March 11, 2025.

The inspection, originally scheduled for completion earlier this year, has been delayed several times following the discovery of multiple serious defects. It is now expected to be completed by July 31, 2025.
