Parliament in turmoil over nurses’ strike statement

Parliamentary proceedings were thrown into disarray on Tuesday, June 10, following a tense standoff sparked by an attempt from the Minority to comment on the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).
Dr. Ayew Afriyie, Ranking Member of the Health Committee, sought to make a statement in the House concerning the industrial action. However, First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor declined to admit the statement, leading to a sharp disagreement.
The situation escalated when the Speaker ordered the Parliamentary Marshal to remove Dr. Afriyie from the chamber, prompting a fierce reaction from Minority MPs.
What followed was a chaotic scene marked by loud protests and heated verbal exchanges across the floor. With order rapidly deteriorating, the Speaker was compelled to suspend proceedings and adjourn the House until Wednesday.
