Deputy Presidential Spokesperson sheds light on government’s renewed fight against galamsey

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has underscored the government’s ongoing commitment to tackling illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, particularly within Ghana’s forest reserves.
Madam Muslim affirmed the government’s dedication to environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable livelihoods.
She announced a key legislative change, stating, “The specific provisions in LI-2462 that allowed the President to authorize mining leases in forest reserves have been repealed.” Muslim added that the government has launched a comprehensive strategy in collaboration with security services and the armed forces, who are conducting daily operations against illegal mining activities.
To enhance enforcement, the government is leveraging advanced technology. “We’re deploying geo-sensing systems to detect illegal mining in real-time,” she noted, emphasizing the integration of tech in the national response.
Muslim acknowledged the complexity of the issue, highlighting the need for inclusive solutions. “We understand that more collaboration and stakeholder involvement are crucial. There’s still much more to be done,” she said.
Addressing the root causes of galamsey, Muslim pointed to the lack of economic alternatives for many youth. “The challenge lies in creating viable options for young people who turn to galamsey as a means of survival,” she explained. “We need to shift their mindset toward protecting natural resources and engaging in environmentally sustainable and dignified livelihoods.”
As part of this effort, the government is preparing to launch a national public education initiative and a patriotism campaign aimed at raising awareness and appealing to citizens’ sense of responsibility.
“We’re rolling out a comprehensive education and patriotism campaign to influence public attitudes and behavior,” she stated.
In addition, the Attorney General is currently reviewing and proposing amendments to the Minerals and Mining Act to strengthen legal measures against illegal mining. Muslim called on the media to play a proactive role in the campaign.
“We invite the media to support this national effort. Achieving a mindset shift across the country is vital to safeguarding our environment and future,” she concluded.
