Organized Labour has called on President John Dramani Mahama to proceed with caution regarding his recent directive to suspend post-retirement contract extensions for public sector workers.
The appeal comes in response to the government’s decision to halt the granting of such contract extensions across the public service.
Labour leaders expressed concerns that the move could result in the loss of valuable experience within the workforce, which could negatively impact the efficiency and effectiveness of public sector operations.
Joshua Ansah, the Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), stressed the importance of national progress, highlighting that the development of the country should be the shared responsibility of every Ghanaian. While he voiced support for policies that promote growth and advancement, Ansah cautioned that if such a policy undermines the nation’s development, it should not be embraced.
Organized Labour’s call for a careful review of the directive signals ongoing concern about the potential impact on the country’s public sector and its future growth.
