Parliament approves bill to abolish E-levy

Ghana’s Parliament has passed a bill to abolish the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy) which previously taxed electronic financial transactions in the country.
This was after the House passed the Electronic Transaction Levy Repeal Bill 2025 on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
Introduced in 2022 by the previous Akufo-Addo-led government, the E-levy which was initially introduced at 1.75% before being revised to 1%, imposed taxes on electronic transactions, including mobile money payments, bank transfers, and inward remittances.
The passage of the levy faced significant opposition from the public and various stakeholders who argued that it placed an additional financial burden on citizens and discouraged digital transactions.
However, during the 2025 Budget reading in Parliament on March 11, the Finance Minister, Dr. Ato Forson announced the government’s decision to scrap the levy, and 10% tax on lottery winnings.E-Levy-Charges
The Minister also stated that government will abolish other taxes such as emissions tax, Covid-19 levy, among others.
This forms part of President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to ease burden on the citizenry as promised during his campaign tours in 2024.
