Attorney General defends legality of National Security raid on Dr. Ernest Addison’s residence

Attorney General and Minister of Justice Dr. Dominic Ayine has dismissed allegations that National Security operatives unlawfully raided the home of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison.

Speaking to the media on Monday, March 24, 2025, Dr. Ayine emphasized that the operation was a legally authorized search, supported by warrants issued by the High Court.

The Minority in Parliament had accused the government of orchestrating an unconstitutional raid on Dr. Addison’s residence. They further claimed that security personnel stole GH¢10,000 and jewelry during the search. Dr. Ayine strongly rejected these accusations, labeling them as a deliberate attempt to undermine the credibility of law enforcement.

Dr. Ayine has stated, “If the media is interested, I can provide those warrants. There was no raid on his house, and nothing about our actions was illegal or unconstitutional.”

His comments come amidst ongoing investigations under the government’s ORAL initiative, a program designed to address financial misconduct and corruption. Dr. Ayine assured the public that all law enforcement agencies involved, including the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and National Security, were operating within legal parameters.

He highlighted that the Constitution, under Article 18, sets limits on privacy rights, permitting legally sanctioned searches when due process is followed.

The Attorney General also took aim at opposition figures, accusing them of attempting to tarnish the reputation of law enforcement officials. He specifically criticized Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for allegedly abusing parliamentary immunity to defame public officials carrying out legitimate investigations.

Dr. Ayine revealed, “We have a recording of Addison and what he said about the raid,” offering to release the recording if necessary. He called on critics to cease undermining security officials and to acknowledge the legality of the operation.
