Ghana and Morocco strengthen diplomatic relations

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, recently held productive talks with the Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Imane Ouaadil, to address key matters of mutual concern.

During the discussions, Ambassador Ouaadil reassured that Ghanaians and other Africans living in Morocco are safe, despite misleading social media videos claiming the massacre of 700 Africans.

She clarified that the footage in question pertains to a tragic border incident on June 24, 2022, which resulted in 23 fatalities, none of whom were Ghanaian. The incident has since been thoroughly investigated by Moroccan and Spanish authorities.

In a positive development, Morocco has announced plans to increase scholarships for Ghanaian students from 90 to 180 starting this year, as a gesture of goodwill.

This development highlights Morocco’s dedication to expanding educational opportunities for Ghanaian youth.

The scholarship expansion is set to strengthen both academic and cultural ties between the two countries, offering more Ghanaians the chance to pursue higher education in Morocco.

In addition, Ghana and Morocco have agreed to implement a visa waiver for travelers between the two nations. This groundbreaking agreement aims to promote greater people-to-people exchanges and stimulate tourism and business opportunities. The proposal for the visa waiver will soon be presented to the respective parliaments for ratification, marking a significant advancement in bilateral relations.

The two countries also committed to deeper cooperation in agribusiness, tourism, and security, reflecting their shared goal of fostering economic growth and regional stability.

Minister Ablakwa expressed confidence in the strengthened partnership, highlighting that these initiatives will not only benefit the citizens of both countries but also contribute to the advancement of African unity and progress.
