Western Regional Minister calls for traditional leaders’ support in combating galamsey

Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has reaffirmed his commitment to combating illegal mining, also known as galamsey, and has called on traditional leaders to support the government’s efforts.

Addressing chiefs and queen mothers from the Gwira Traditional Council, Minister Nelson condemned the collaboration between some Ghanaians and foreign nationals, particularly Chinese miners, in exploiting the country’s forest reserves and water bodies for gold extraction.

He described the situation as unacceptable and urged traditional authorities to take a firm stance against such activities.

“The fight against galamsey is not politically motivated,” the minister emphasized. “It’s about protecting our environment and natural resources for future generations. Chiefs must actively support this cause, rather than simply seeking forgiveness when illegal miners are arrested.”

Minister Nelson also expressed concern over the negative impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s cocoa industry, warning that continued destruction could lead to a severe decline in the country’s cocoa production.

He called on all stakeholders to take the issue seriously to prevent long-term economic and environmental damage.

Meanwhile, the Paramount Chief of the Gwira Traditional Council, Awulae Angama Tuagyan, urged for a more structured approach to mining in the area. While acknowledging the need for some form of mining, he emphasized that it should be carried out within a legal framework.

He also called on the Minerals Commission to streamline the licensing process to ensure proper supervision and adherence to environmental regulations.

As the government intensifies its crackdown on illegal mining, the role of traditional leaders is crucial in enforcing responsible mining practices and safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources.
