Mahama pledges to complete stalled Takoradi Market Circle project
President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents of the Western Region that his government is committed to completing the stalled Takoradi Market Circle redevelopment project.
He revealed that discussions would be held with the contractor to establish a new work schedule to ensure the project’s successful completion.
During a visit to the project site as part of his tour to express gratitude for the region’s support in the 2024 elections, Mr. Mahama emphasized the importance of the market’s redevelopment.
“We are here to inspect and assess the project’s progress. On Friday, we will meet with the contractor and the Minister of Finance to strategize on completing the Takoradi Market Circle project,” he stated. “Very soon, the contractor, engineers, and workers will return to the site to complete the project for you.”
The redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle was initiated in 2020 by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at an estimated cost of 48 million euros. The project, awarded to Italian construction firm Messrs Contracta Costruzioni Italia SLR, was initially expected to be completed in 2023 but has since stalled.
Upon completion, the modernized market will feature 2,408 stores, 33 restaurants and food courts, bulk breaking areas, a visitors’ car park, a police station, a fire station, offices, and a post office. Additional amenities will include a clinic, administrative offices, a daycare center, banking spaces, a waste separation dock, and staff changing rooms.
