“We will conduct a thorough SIM re-registration process”- Sam George

Samuel Nartey George, the Minister-designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, has revealed plans for a new SIM card re-registration initiative under the Mahama administration.

Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, Mr. George reassured Ghanaians that the upcoming re-registration process would be more straightforward and hassle-free than the previous one.

“We will do a proper SIM re-registration again… but this time, no one will go through the stress,” the Ningo-Prampram MP stated.

The SIM registration process in Ghana, carried out in 2022 under the Akufo-Addo administration, encountered several challenges.

Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the then-Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, acknowledged that while progress had been made, nearly 10 million people who had linked their SIM cards to their Ghana Cards had yet to finish the final registration steps.

Despite these issues, the government highlighted some notable successes. By October 2022, around 28.9 million SIM cards had been linked to Ghana Cards, with 18.9 million completing the full registration process. Officials emphasized that the exercise was crucial for improving security and reducing fraud.

Now, with a new government in power, Sam George has pledged to adopt a more efficient approach, ensuring that all citizens can register their SIM cards without any barriers.
