Voting ends in 2024 general elections, counting underway nationwide
Voting in Ghana’s 2024 general elections has officially concluded, with vote counting currently underway at polling stations nationwide.
The Electoral Commission has kept the public informed through multiple media briefings, providing updates on the progress and addressing concerns.
However, the day was marred by several incidents across the country, resulting in arrests, a reported fatality, and mutual accusations between the two main political parties—the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In the Obuasi East constituency, tensions escalated after an altercation involving the NDC Communications Officer and military personnel.
The officer reportedly assaulted two armed soldiers who were attempting to visit a polling station. The confrontation has raised questions about the role of security personnel at polling centres.
Elsewhere, instances of ballot stuffing and allegations of vote-buying were reported, adding to concerns over the integrity of the electoral process.
In the Northern Region, a shooting incident at Nyankpala led to the death of one person and injured another.
The Ghana Police Service has arrested four suspects identified as Majid Issah, Fodi Issiage Kamara, Yakubu Simalia, and Alhaji Bashiru Mohamed in connection with the incident.
At the St. Theresa’s School polling station in the Okaikwei South constituency, confusion erupted when a group, allegedly linked to the NPP, was found in possession of what appeared to be fake printed ballots.
As investigations into these incidents continue, the Electoral Commission has reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency and upholding the will of the Ghanaian people during this critical exercise of democracy.
