CJ Orders Closure of Upper East Courts amid rising Bawku conflict

Bawku

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has mandated the immediate shutdown of all courts in Ghana’s Upper East Region, citing escalating concerns over safety due to the intensifying Bawku conflict. The decision comes after court personnel and judges expressed serious security concerns.

This closure, which will last until further notice, was conveyed in a statement by Judicial Service Secretary Justice Cyra Pamela Koranteng JA on October 29.

The statement instructs court registrars to secure all court assets and advises judicial staff to prioritize their safety.

The conflict, which has led to at least 16 fatalities and numerous injuries, prompted the government to impose a 12-hour curfew from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, with additional police presence along the Bolga-Tamale highway after a recent shooting.

The resurgence of violence is reportedly connected to the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief, from exile, reigniting a longstanding chieftaincy dispute.

The impacted courts include the High Court, Circuit Court, and District Courts in Bolgatanga, as well as District Courts in Zuarungu, Zebila, Garu, and Bongo.
