PIAC and partners hold consultations on the decline of crude oil production in Ghana

The Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC), in collaboration with partners including Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Ministry of Energy (MoEn), Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), the Petroleum Commission (PC), and Ghana National Gas Limited Company (GNGLC), will host a two-day technical consultative workshop on October 16 and 17, 2024, in Accra.

This event aims to bring together technical experts, policymakers, key stakeholders, academics, and industry representatives to address the decline in crude oil production and explore potential solutions.

The workshop will feature presentations and panel discussions focusing on the current state of crude oil production in Ghana and its decreasing trend.

Sessions will cover how to streamline regulatory policies to attract investments in the upstream oil and gas sector, tackle technical challenges, and navigate the oil sector in the context of the global energy transition.

The workshop will be structured in three parts: opening, technical, and closing sessions, with the opening and closing segments streamed live on PIAC’s Facebook page. Emerita Professor Elizabeth Ardayfio-Schnadorf, Chairperson of PIAC, emphasized that the workshop aims to create a comprehensive platform for stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions and develop actionable solutions to combat the decline.

Professor Ardayfio-Schnadorf noted that the Committee has expressed concerns about the decreasing production trend in its Statutory Reports and has recommended initiatives to accelerate the sustainable development of Ghana’s petroleum resources. She highlighted the importance of a holistic approach to addressing the identified issues, hence the need for this technical consultative workshop.

In addition to Professor Ardayfio-Schnadorf, other speakers will include Herbert Krapa, Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, and Dr. Thomas Manu, former Deputy Chief Executive of GNPC. Mr. Constantine K.M. Kudzedzi, a lawyer and Bishops’ representative on the PIAC Board, will deliver the keynote address.
