Galamsey: Organized Labor Calls Off October 10 Strike

Organized Labor has called off its planned strike on October 10 regarding the issue of illegal mining.

This announcement was made by Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), on Wednesday.

During a meeting in Accra with government officials, the Congress received assurances of improved measures to combat illegal mining, prompting their decision to suspend the strike.

This follows a recent announcement from the industrial group that it would move forward with the strike, as the government’s measures had fallen short of its expectations.

In his address to union members, Mr. Ansah revealed that the President had instructed the Lands Minister to submit a request to Parliament for the revocation of L.I. 2462.

He noted that this, along with the deployment of soldiers to aid in the fight against illegal mining and the establishment of 14 courts for prosecuting arrested miners, demonstrated a significant commitment from the government.

Mr. Ansah also warned that organized labor would respond if the government failed to deliver on its promises.
