Stabbing rampage at Shanghai Walmart leaves 3 dead and 15 injured
A tragic incident unfolded on Monday night at a Walmart supermarket in Shanghai, where three people lost their lives and 15 others sustained injuries after a man went on a stabbing spree.
The Chinese police apprehended a 37-year-old suspect, identified only by his surname, Lin, at the scene.
Authorities stated that Lin had traveled to Shanghai to “vent his anger due to a personal economic dispute,” and further investigations are ongoing.
The attack occurred in the Songjiang district, a densely populated area known for its proximity to several universities.
According to police reports, the three victims succumbed to their injuries at the hospital, while the remaining injured individuals are not believed to have life-threatening wounds.
Eyewitness Shi, who operates a jewelry store in the Ludu International Commercial Plaza, described the scene, saying, “There was blood everywhere.”
He recounted the chaos as dozens of firefighters and SWAT officers rushed into the mall, urging patrons to evacuate.
“I didn’t know what was happening, but suddenly, I saw people running in a panic. No one had ever experienced something like this, and we weren’t mentally prepared for it… This kind of random incident is terrifying and unsettling,” he added, noting that he had “narrowly escaped” death.
Discussions about the attack appear to have been censored on Chinese social media platforms. Despite the incident, the supermarket reopened for business on Tuesday, albeit with heightened security measures.
While firearms are prohibited in China, the country has recently experienced a surge in knife attacks. Notably, last month, a 10-year-old Japanese student was fatally stabbed near his school in southern China, and in June, four American college instructors were attacked in a public park in Jilin.
Additionally, a stabbing incident in May at a hospital in Yunnan resulted in two deaths and 21 injuries.
