Mahama warns Akufo-Addo against $800 Million gas processing deal
John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has cautioned President Akufo-Addo against signing an $800 million gas processing contract, warning it could lead to significant financial losses for the state in the future.
This follows claims by the Minority Spokesperson on Energy, John Jinapor, alleging that the CEO of Ghana National Gas is under pressure from the presidency to approve the contract without proper legislative oversight.
During a community engagement at Town Council Line in the Greater Accra Region on Saturday, September 28, Mahama stressed that the contract must be presented to Parliament for approval.
He suggested that the government’s urgency to finalize the deal, as its term nears completion, is driven by self-interest.
Mahama highlighted the potential long-term consequences of the gas processing agreement, warning that those responsible would be held accountable if the state incurs financial losses.
He emphasized that signing the contract could result in judgment debts for the country, urging the government to halt the process if the contract has not yet been signed.
He also expressed his commitment to opposing any actions that do not serve the best interests of Ghanaians, reiterating his promise of accountability under his leadership.
