Essikado-Ketan: Kennedy Agyapong warns NPP against underestimating NDC’s candidate
Outspoken Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has issued a strong warning to New Patriotic Party (NPP) members in the Essikado-Ketan constituency, urging them not to take the challenge posed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lightly in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
His caution came during the launch of the NPP Parliamentary Candidate, Charles Bissue’s campaign, in the Western Region on Saturday.
Ken Agyapong specifically called on party members to take the candidacy of Dr. Grace Ayensu Danquah, the NDC’s parliamentary hopeful, seriously. He emphasized that despite the NPP’s 20-year dominance in the constituency, Dr. Danquah has emerged as a formidable opponent, having previously contested the seat twice against the incumbent MP, Joe Ghartey.
“She has contested a sitting MP twice. The last time, the sitting MP had 26,000 votes, and she had 24,000.”
He warned that if party supporters and executives become complacent, assuming the constituency remains a stronghold, they could lose the seat to the NDC.
Agyapong encouraged all NPP faithful to treat the upcoming elections with seriousness and to avoid viewing the campaign as a mere “funfair.” He urged them to hit the ground running by visiting homes and actively campaigning to convince voters. According to him, hard work and grassroots engagement would be key to securing a win for the NPP candidate, Charles Bissue.
“I plead with you, let’s not treat this as a funfair but go to the various houses and spread the good word. Do not underestimate the Parliamentary Candidate of the NDC who is contesting. Do not underestimate her,” Agyapong advised.
He further called for unity within the party ranks, stressing that divisions could weaken their chances of victory. “If you joke, thinking this is your stronghold and don’t campaign, you may lose the seat. So, I plead with the executives and the PC, we need unity, or else we won’t be victorious,” Agyapong stated.
The Assin Central MP’s remarks come as the NPP seeks to retain the Essikado-Ketan seat after incumbent MP Joe Ghartey stepped down, with Charles Bissue stepping in as the party’s new candidate. The upcoming election is expected to be closely contested, with Dr. Grace Danquah once again representing the NDC.
