Minority leader criticizes recall of parliament as unnecessary and wasteful

Minority in Parliament has voiced strong objections to the urgent recall, deeming it unnecessary and an inefficient use of public funds.

The Minority caucus in Parliament has voiced strong objections to the recent urgent recall of the House, deeming it unnecessary and an inefficient use of public funds.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, expressed disappointment over the recall, which was convened to address 11 scheduled items. However, only two were discussed during the two-day sitting at the Accra International Conference Centre.

Dr. Ato Forson argued that the limited progress made did not justify the costs involved in recalling MPs, especially given the current economic challenges facing the country.

He criticized the focus on tax exemptions and loans, asserting that the tax exemptions, in particular, should be curtailed, as they benefit “crony businesses” at a time when the nation is financially strained.

“Mr. Speaker, I want to say that there was no way the business we have done so far should have warranted such a recall. We were recalled to tackle tax exemptions and loans. Right Honourable Speaker, one of it [the loans] has been approved.

“Mr. Speaker, our concern remains with the tax assumptions. We strongly believe that these giveaways should be curtailed. We strongly believe that these giveaways of tax exemptions are unwarranted.

“We believe that at a time that the country is bleeding, Ghana should not be giving such giveaways to crony businesses.”
