11-year-old boy arrested for fatal shooting of former US mayor and daughter
Police in Minden, Louisiana, have arrested an 11-year-old boy in connection with the fatal shooting of former city mayor Joe Cornelius Sr., 82, and his daughter, Keisha Miles, 31.
The victims were discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in their home around 6:30 am local time on Sunday.
Authorities have not released the boy’s name but confirmed he is a “relative or family member” of the victims.
According to law enforcement, the boy confessed to the crime after an adult brought him to the scene. He is currently being held on two counts of first-degree murder, with a bond set at $500,000 (£381,000).
City Police Chief Jared McIver expressed the shock felt by the community, saying, “But the city is also relieved as well because the person that committed the crime is locked up.”
He explained that police were alerted to the incident by another family member and found two guns, believed to be the murder weapons, hidden at the scene.
Initially, the boy’s account did not match the evidence, but he later confessed.
Despite this, the police chief indicated that the motive remains unclear: “What is the ‘why’ behind it? We do not know that yet. We are still piecing the puzzle pieces together right now.”
McIver noted that the case has been particularly unsettling due to the boy’s age. “It is a shock to the community.
Everyone knows Mr. Joe,” he said, referring to Cornelius, who was well-known locally. Cornelius had been a frequent visitor to the police department, known for his jovial nature.
The chief declined to confirm reports suggesting the shooting might have been related to a dispute over video game purchases.
The boy has detailed in his confession how he obtained the guns, but authorities are not yet ready to disclose this information publicly.
Minden, a city with approximately 11,000 residents located about 30 miles east of Shreveport, has been deeply affected by the tragedy.
In addition to his time as mayor, Joe Cornelius had also served as a city councilman, sheriff’s deputy, marshal, and was involved in community programs for black youth.
Current Minden Mayor Nick Cox paid tribute to Cornelius, stating, “Joe Cornelius’s years of service to Minden were marked by his commitment and dedication to the betterment of our community.”
He added, “During this incredibly difficult time, I ask that we all keep Joe’s family in our thoughts and prayers. May they find comfort and strength in the midst of this tragedy.”
