Asantehene destools Wirempehene for Violating Asante Sacred Oath
On Monday, September 2, 2024, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II officially destooled Wirempehene Nana Opia Mensah II for violating the revered Asante Sacred Oath (Ntamkɛseɛ).
The decision was made during a session of the Kumasi Traditional Council held at the Manhyia Palace, where Nana Opia Mensah II faced reproach for his blatant disregard for the sacred tradition.
The 90-year-old former Member of Parliament, who had served as chief for 54 years, was stripped of his title due to his attempts to distort historical facts for personal benefit, thereby breaching both statutory and traditional laws.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II reprimanded Nana Opia Mensah II for knowingly and deceitfully invoking the Great Oath, despite being aware that the stool did not rightfully belong to him.
He was accused of exploiting his long reign to conceal his illegitimacy, ultimately leading to his removal from the throne.
In accordance with tradition, the chief’s traditional slippers were promptly removed, symbolizing his destoolment.
This decisive action followed a detailed report presented to the Council on August 15, 2024, which clarified that the Aduana Clan, to which Nana Opia Mensah II belongs, does not hold the legitimate claim to the throne, as that right belongs to the Oyoko Clan.
