PAC chairman calls on GBC D-G to clarify 2024 African Games payment controversy

James Klutse Avedzi, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), has called on the Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, to provide clarity regarding the contentious payment for the 2024 All African Games.
This follows Professor Alhassan’s challenge to the Sports Minister’s claim that $3.6 million was paid to GBC for coverage of the event. In a statement on GTV, Professor Alhassan asserted that GBC only received $105,000, which was intended to support the broadcaster’s decision to dedicate an entire channel to the African Games.
“I was shocked to hear that the Minister of Youth and Sports said they paid GBC over $3 million. GBC’s total benefit from the African Games was $105,000,” Professor Alhassan stated.
However, the Sports Ministry has demanded an apology from Professor Alhassan, accusing him of misleading the public. The Ministry’s Executive Assistant, Jamaludeen Abdullah, suggested that the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s Director-General is intentionally confusing the public about the financial transactions.
In response, PAC Chairman Avedzi emphasized the need for Professor Alhassan to provide a full explanation. “If he had explained that GBC received the $3.6 million but transferred it to a third party, the issue would be resolved. The Director-General, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports must reconcile the figures and inform the public,” Avedzi stated.
