National Peace Council Calls on Media to Refrain from Preemptively Announcing 2024 Election Results
The National Peace Council has cautioned the media against announcing results of the 2024 elections before the Electoral Commission (EC) makes the official declaration.
The Council emphasized that only the EC has the authority to declare election results, and this process should be adhered to in order to prevent potential disturbances.
At a forum in Accra, Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, urged media outlets to refrain from declaring results prematurely. He stressed that radio and television stations are not permitted to announce election results by law.
The forum, organized by the Peace Council, aimed to educate the media about the Council’s role and to promote public understanding, thereby supporting national peace. It also sought to build a constructive relationship between the media and the Council to combat hate speech, disinformation, misinformation, and mal-information in Ghanaian politics.
Rev. Dr. Adu Gyamfi highlighted that the 2024 elections represent a critical test for Ghana’s democracy. He urged the media to provide accurate reporting to ensure the electorate is well-informed.
