NDC sets conditions for signing peace pact ahead of elections

Peace Pact

The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has outlined specific conditions that must be met before the party will consider signing the Peace Pact proposed by the National Peace Council in preparation for the December 7 elections.

Mr. Nketia voiced doubts about the effectiveness of previous Peace Pacts, pointing out that they have not yielded the desired results.

He specifically referenced the 2020 elections, during which he claimed eight NDC members were killed by national security operatives without any subsequent accountability.

During an August 20 meeting with the National Peace Council at the NDC headquarters, Mr. Nketia laid out several conditions for the NDC’s participation in the Peace Pact.

The NDC is demanding the full implementation of recommendations from the investigation into the violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

They also call for the prosecution of individuals responsible for election-related violence in the last election, underscoring the need for justice and prevention.

Additionally, the party is insisting on accountability for irregularities in the printing of ballot papers and is calling for visible measures to prevent such issues from recurring.

The NDC also wants a thorough investigation into the missing IT equipment from the Electoral Commission’s (EC) warehouse, raising concerns about the integrity of the EC’s systems and the potential bias of its staff.

Moreover, the NDC is urging the President to make a public commitment to respect the results of the 2024 elections.

Finally, the party insists that the Peace Pact should be signed by key figures, including the Inspector General of Police, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, and the National Security Coordinator, before they will consider signing it themselves.
