Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Rev. Eastwood Anaba resign from National Cathedral Board

Duncan-Williams and Eastwood Anaba, have resigned from the Board of Trustees overseeing the construction of the National Cathedral in Ghana.

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Reverend Eastwood Anaba, the presiding archbishop and general overseer of the Action Chapel International and the President of the Eastwood Anaba Ministries, respectively, have resigned from the Board of Trustees overseeing the construction of the National Cathedral in Ghana.

The National Cathedral, envisioned as a symbol of unity and pride for Ghanaians, has been a topic of controversy and debate since its inception.

In a joint statement, both Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Reverend Anaba explained that their decision to resign was a response to the government’s failure to appoint an independent accounting firm to audit all public funds contributed to the National Cathedral project.

The statement cited their concerns, stating, “despite our prayers, best hopes and wishes, unfortunately, a needed audit to help restore public confidence and trust in this consequential project has not been enacted to the best of our knowledge. We, therefore, regret that as a matter of conscience and faith, we hereby submit our resignation from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral.”

In January 2023, the two clergymen had called for an immediate suspension of the National Cathedral’s construction, pending a comprehensive audit of the project.

They emphasized that the current economic climate in Ghana posed challenges to the project’s timely completion, and they called for the appointment of an independent accounting firm to audit all public funds contributed to and spent on the National Cathedral.

Their decision to resign from the Board reflects ongoing concerns and discussions surrounding the National Cathedral’s construction in Ghana.

“The current economic climate in Ghana presents obstacles to the timely construction and completion of the National Cathedral… We, therefore, resolve: That in the spirit and cause of transparency and accountability to the Ghanaian people, the current Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral shall appoint an independent, nationally recognized accounting firm to audit all public funds contributed to and spent by the National Cathedral,” the two clergymen said in a memo.
