Kejetia Market disconnected over GH¢7 Million debt to ECG

The Kumasi City Market, also known as the New Kejetia Market, has been disconnected from the national power grid by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) due to unpaid arrears exceeding GH¢7 million.

This action follows the market’s failure to adhere to a previously agreed-upon payment plan.

In April 2024, the market faced a similar power disconnection, which was temporarily resolved after the market’s management assured ECG of their commitment to settling the debt.

However, despite paying GH¢1.7 million of the GH¢9.7 million owed as of June, ECG proceeded with the disconnection, citing non-compliance with the payment schedule.

Managing Director of the market, Edmond Kofi Duffuor, expressed frustration, highlighting the market’s efforts to settle the debt and questioning the disconnection given their payments to ECG.

The market is currently relying on generators for power, a situation Duffuor describes as unsustainable due to the high cost of diesel.

Traders are now appealing to the Local Government Ministry to step in and resolve the issue to ensure the market’s smooth operation.
