A mailroom supervisor at Atwater Prison in California has died after coming into contact with mail “saturated in an unknown substance,” according to the US Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Marc Fischer, a Coast Guard veteran and 23-year prison employee, began feeling “unwell” following exposure to the substance and died after being rushed to the hospital.

A second worker was also exposed and hospitalized but has since been released.

The Bureau of Prisons stated, “On Friday, August 9, USP Atwater and the Federal Bureau of Prisons lost one of our own.”

Despite quick actions from co-workers and emergency services, Fischer was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital

Authorities are investigating whether the mail contained fentanyl, and prison visitations have been suspended until further notice.

Atwater Prison, a high-security facility located in Merced County, California, houses around 1,200 inmates.

Fischer, who had worked as a correctional officer before being promoted to Supervisory Correctional Systems Specialist in 2009, leaves behind his wife, son, daughter, and many grieving friends and colleagues.
