Ghana bans copper imports from France to boost local industry

Companies operating within Ghana’s electricity value chain are now prohibited from sourcing copper for cable manufacturing from France.

According to the Energy Commission, the ban is intended to support local copper producers who comply with the requirements set out in the local content regulations.

Maame Yaa Akowuah Tamakloe, Lead Officer of the Local Content and Local Participation Unit at the Energy Commission, explained that the move is expected to boost growth in Ghana’s copper mining and processing industries.

She said, “Subsequently, India procurement processes, when they submit their procurement plan to us and they indicate that they are going to supply or they are going to source copper from France, that is where we’ll tell you, no, we have in-country capacity. First, give consideration to this in-country capacity. So far as they meet the industry, we have requirements.”

“The fact that we are promoting indigenous businesses does not mean that we should relent in our efforts to ensure that they meet the minimum standards that the industry requires. So, if you meet all the standards, there are opportunities for you to also benefit from the electricity value chain,”
