Mahama hails acquittal of Ato Forson as victory for rule of law
Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has celebrated the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, in the high-profile ambulance case.
The court also cleared Richard Jakpa, who was co-accused in the trial. The acquittal, delivered on Tuesday, July 30, was hailed by Mr. Mahama as a significant victory for the rule of law.
In a Facebook post, the former President expressed his satisfaction with the ruling, reiterating his belief that the case was driven by political motives rather than legal merit. He emphasized that the outcome demonstrated the continued presence of justice within the country’s legal system.
Mr. Mahama further pledged that, if elected, he would appoint a fair-minded Minister for Justice. This individual would collaborate with the legal community and the Judicial Council to implement reforms aimed at establishing a truly independent judiciary.
“This appeal was made some time ago when they filed a no-case petition before the court, and the High Court rejected it, so they went to appeal. So, it came as quite a pleasant surprise,” Mahama remarked, adding, “But it shows that we still have justice in this country, we can work to make the judiciary what we want it to be.”
He concluded his statement with a commitment to ensuring that justice prevails in Ghana, stating, “I pledge to appoint a fair-minded Minister for Justice who will work with the legal fraternity and the Judicial Council to carry out reforms to ensure we have a truly independent judiciary we can all be proud of. #JusticePrevails.”
