The Graduate Unemployed Nurse and Midwives Association (GUNMA) has expressed its approval of the government’s decision to recruit over 15,000 new health professionals.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Health (MoH) in a statement released on Friday, July 26, 2024. The MoH confirmed that the recruitment process for 15,200 nurses and midwives will begin on Monday, August 5, 2024, following the necessary financial clearance granted by the Ministry of Finance.
Qualified candidates are required to apply through the MoH’s online portal, where they can select their preferred agency under the Ministry. The application window will close on Friday, August 23, 2024.
This recruitment drive follows a series of protests by health professionals over the government’s delay in addressing the backlog from 2020, 2021, and 2022.
Reacting to the news, Ibrahim Haruna, National President of the Graduate Unemployed Nurse and Midwives Association, expressed cautious optimism.
“We’re very grateful to the Ministry of Health. It’s not bad news, but it’s not completely what we were expecting. That is what we have got for now, so we will take it,” Haruna stated.
He added that the Association had been anticipating official confirmation after receiving a call from the Ministry the previous week regarding the financial clearance. “It’s welcome news,” Haruna concluded.
