Auditor-General’s report exposes substandard food in school feeding programme
The Auditor-General’s 2022 report has revealed alarming issues within the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), disclosing that basic school pupils are being served substandard food.
A performance audit on the management of the GSFP found that some schools were using mouldy corn dough and failing to include protein in dishes like jollof rice, contrary to programme requirements.
The audit, which assessed the programme’s progress and performance, discovered that at Ankyernyin D/A Basic School, jollof rice was prepared without any protein. Similarly, at Kanfakrom D/A School in the Western Region, mouldy corn dough was used to prepare banku for pupils.
Pupils and teachers reported that complaints about the poor quality of food were consistently ignored. They highlighted issues such as lack of fish, foreign materials in meals, bad palm oil, and unpleasant smells and tastes.
Despite these complaints, caterers continued to provide substandard meals, making it difficult for pupils to eat.
