Road Traffic Regulations: New L.I to grant MPs and Ministers siren privileges, no speed-limits

The Ministry of Transport has presented a L.I to Parliament, proposing amendments to the Road Traffic Regulations 2012.

The Ministry of Transport has presented a Legislative Instrument (L.I) to Parliament, proposing amendments to the Road Traffic Regulations 2012.

The new changes, if approved, will extend privileges previously reserved for emergency and specialized vehicles to Members of Parliament (MPs) and Ministers of State.

The proposed amendment to Regulation 74 of LI 2180 will allow the installation of sirens or bells as warning appliances on vehicles owned by Supreme Court justices, MPs, and Ministers of State. This means these officials can legally use sirens to navigate through traffic congestion anywhere in Ghana.

Franklin Cudjoe of IMANI-Africa posted portions of the Legislative Instrument on Facebook, highlighting the implications of the changes.

Additionally, an amendment to Regulation 166 of LI 2180 suggests that speed limit regulations will no longer apply to MPs and Ministers of State.

In December 2020, Parliament passed the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2020, which introduced harsher penalties for road traffic offenders whose actions result in the death of an unborn child.

This marked the first time a private member’s Bill proposed by MPs was approved by Parliament.
