The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA) has announced a planned protest on Wednesday, July 10, against the recently imposed 5% excise tax on locally produced plastic products.

The Association, representing local industry players, issued a formal request to the government on June 27, calling for the immediate suspension of the tax. They warned that failure to meet their demands would result in a seven-day production shutdown to express their dissatisfaction.

At a press conference, GPMA President Ebbo Botwe emphasized the urgency for the government to reconsider its stance and engage with all stakeholders to prevent potential economic repercussions from the planned production halt.

The government’s failure to address the Association’s demands has prompted the demonstration. In a statement dated July 1, GPMA, in collaboration with the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers and the Plastic Sellers Association of Ghana, confirmed the protest.

The protest will commence at the Obra Spot at Circle, proceed to the Accra Technical University, and conclude at the Ministry of Finance, with over 400 participants expected.

The Association is urging all members to join the demonstration to ensure their concerns are addressed.
