“Inside Out 2” breaks record as fastest animated film to surpass $1 billion globally
“Inside Out 2” has broken records as the fastest animated film to surpass $1 billion globally, achieving this milestone just 19 days after its release.
Disney’s executive vice president of theatrical distribution, Tony Chambers, expressed excitement over the achievement, highlighting the film’s ability to draw global audiences and praising Pixar’s creativity.
The success of “Inside Out 2” has significantly boosted the 2024 box office, which was struggling prior to its June 16 release.
According to Comscore data, domestic sales were lagging more than 25% behind 2023 figures until the film’s debut.
Senior media analyst at Comscore, Paul Dergarabedian, noted that the film’s performance has helped reduce the year-over-year domestic revenue deficit from 27% to 19%, reshaping industry expectations in a short span.
The movie is currently the highest-grossing film of the year and marks the first to cross the $1 billion mark since “Barbie” in July of the previous year.
It joins the ranks of other Disney and Pixar blockbusters like “The Incredibles 2,” “Finding Dory,” and the “Toy Story” series in achieving this milestone.
Daniel Loria, editorial director at Box Office Pro, emphasized the impact of movie theater attendance on industry recovery, despite challenges earlier in the year.
He projected a total domestic box office for 2024 between $8.1 billion and $8.4 billion, slightly down from 2023 due to various factors including the strike affecting the industry.
However, he expressed optimism about potential recovery in the second half of the year and beyond, depending on future box office hits.
