Former football star Roberto Baggio was injured in an armed robbery at his home in northern Italy.
The incident occurred when at least five individuals broke into his villa in Altavilla Vicentina late in the evening.
Baggio was hit on the forehead with a gun during the robbery and received stitches at an emergency room.
In his first public statement after the incident, Baggio expressed gratitude for the well wishes and mentioned overcoming fear as a priority.
He described the violence as causing only minor injuries but significant fear.
Local authorities and public figures condemned the robbery. Luca Zaia, the president of Veneto region, expressed hope for Baggio’s recovery and emphasized the need for justice against the perpetrators.
The robbery lasted around 40 minutes, during which Baggio attempted to intervene but was injured.
His family was locked in a room while the burglars ransacked the house. The amount stolen is not disclosed.
Baggio, known as “Divin Codino” during his football career, notably led Italy to a World Cup final in 1994 but missed a crucial penalty in the shootout.
He retired in 2004 after playing for clubs like AC Milan and Inter Milan.
