Four Indian students drowned in the Volkhov River in northwestern Russia, according to a statement by India’s foreign ministry on Friday.

A fifth student was rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment. The exact timing of the incident remains unclear.

The ministry reported that two bodies have been recovered, while the search for the other two is ongoing.

The students, aged 18 to 20, were from the Jalgaon district in Maharashtra, India, and were studying at Yaroslav-the-Wise Novgorod State University in Velikiy Novgorod.

“Our Consulate in St Petersburg is coordinating with local authorities for the repatriation of the mortal remains,” the statement read.
