Three arrested for illegal firearm possession following EC violence at Kasoa
On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the Ghana Police Service arrested three individuals at Ofaakor, near Kasoa in the Central Region, for possession of a firearm without lawful authority.
The suspects, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, Mustapha Mohammed, and Abdul Aziz Musah, were apprehended while traveling in a Honda CRV with registration number GX-2044-19 near the Electoral Commission office at Ofaakor.
A pump-action gun and four rounds of ammunition were confiscated from the vehicle.
The arrests occurred in the wake of violence at the Kasoa Electoral Commission office that left four people injured. One of the injured, Ato Koomson, son of incumbent MP Mavis Hawa Koomson, was stabbed in the chest and transferred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra due to the severity of his injuries.
Three members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) also sustained injuries and were admitted to the Kasoa Polyclinic.
The clash, which took place around 5 am, involved members of the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and stemmed from a dispute over the queuing of voters seeking to transfer their votes to the constituency. The suspects are currently assisting the police with their investigation.
