Bill Walton, a renowned NBA Hall of Famer and prominent sports broadcaster, has died at the age of 71 following a prolonged fight with cancer, the NBA announced on Monday.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver described Walton as “truly one of a kind.”

Walton’s legacy spans from his stellar college basketball career at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where his 6-foot-11 frame led the Bruins to two championship victories and an impressive 88-game winning streak.

He then transitioned to the NBA, where he was the top overall draft pick in 1974, joining the Portland Trail Blazers and eventually winning a championship with them in 1977.

Silver praised Walton’s impact on the league, noting how he redefined the center position with his “unique all-around skills.”

Despite facing chronic foot injuries that limited his professional playing career to 468 games, Walton remained deeply involved in basketball, becoming an Emmy Award-winning commentator known for his infectious enthusiasm and love for the game.

Walton’s journey was marked by overcoming personal challenges, including a pronounced stutter in his early life.

He recalled his transformation in speaking abilities at age 28 as a significant accomplishment, despite initially feeling self-conscious about his appearance.

Beyond his on-court and broadcasting achievements, Walton’s vibrant presence and colorful tie-dyed T-shirts made him easily recognizable in the media booth.

Silver fondly remembered Walton’s zest for life, his warm demeanor, and his eagerness to share wisdom at league events.

UCLA’s basketball coach Mick Cronin acknowledged Walton’s profound impact on the sport, describing him as a pivotal figure in both UCLA’s program and college basketball overall.

Walton’s induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 solidified his status as a basketball icon.

He is survived by his wife and four sons, including Luke Walton, a former NBA player who now serves as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
