Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, is set to introduce a private member’s bill in Parliament aimed at preventing politicians and politically exposed individuals from acquiring state assets.

This proposed legislation seeks to eliminate loopholes in the current legal framework that allow for the exploitation of political positions for personal benefit.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, May 21, Ablakwa revealed his longstanding campaign against this practice, which spans 16 years, and emphasized the need for robust legislation with deterrent sanctions to prevent further abuses.

“In the coming days, I will sponsor a Private Member’s Bill in Parliament to explicitly prohibit politicians and politically exposed persons from participating, directly or indirectly, in the purchase of state assets,” Ablakwa stated. “The objective is to close all legal loopholes that some politicians seem to be exploiting. After 16 years of crusading against the unethical acquisition of state assets by politicians, it’s time for strong legislation to end this malpractice.”

This initiative follows Ablakwa’s recent petition to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), requesting an investigation into the sale of four SSNIT-owned hotels to Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the Minister for Food and Agriculture. Ablakwa has called for a halt to the sale, citing a lack of due process and procurement breaches.

In response, Dr. Acheampong has dismissed Mr. Ablakwa’s allegations as baseless and an attempt to damage his reputation.
