Seven university students have died in Nigeria’s Bayelsa state, suspected to be from inhaling fumes from a generator.

The incident occurred in a music studio where the young men had been working late into the night and fell asleep with the generator running.

Authorities suspect carbon monoxide emissions as the cause but are continuing investigations.

According to local media, six bodies were discovered on Tuesday morning, with one person found unconscious and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The police have cordoned off the area and are looking into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The victims were undergraduates from Niger Delta University (NDU) in Amassoma, using their music recording activities to support their education.

This incident underscores a broader issue in Nigeria, where many businesses and households rely on generators due to unreliable power supply.

The International Energy Agency reports that generators cover around 40% of Nigeria’s electricity needs.

President Bola Tinubu has recently directed government agencies to purchase vehicles and generators powered by natural gas, aiming to transition towards cleaner energy sources and reduce fuel costs.
