Global Unity Through Cultural Diversity: Reflecting on International Day for Dialogue and Development

International Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is observed annually on May 21 to highlight not only the richness of the world’s cultures but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue in achieving peace and sustainable development.

Commemorated on the theme: Celebrating Unity in Difference, to celebrate cultural diversity through which we can build the intellectual and moral solidarity of mankind.

Lecturer at the History Department at the University of Cape Coast, Professor Botwe, said culture influences an individual’s perception of the world in terms of dressing, food, and amongst others.

According to him, the world is changing with time, and some cultural practices need to be discarded as it promote retrogression.

Some importance of cultural diversity, Prof. Botwe mentioned, is understanding one’s identity, respecting and understanding each other, as well as a multicultural community.

Professor Botwe said that the 17 Sustainable Development Goals can best be achieved by drawing upon the creative potential of the world’s diverse cultures and engaging in continuous dialogue to ensure that all members of society benefit from sustainable development.

Culture can be depicted through marriage, dressing, food, and lifestyle.
