The Electoral Commission (EC) states that extending the deadline for the ongoing limited voter registration exercise is “not feasible.”

Despite initial technical challenges, the EC reported smooth operations across the country. The registration began on May 7, 2024, and will end on May 27, 2024.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Deputy EC Chair in Charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, affirmed that the 21-day period is sufficient.

He noted that initial long queues have decreased, and mobile teams have been deployed to hard-to-reach areas to ensure wider access.

Tettey emphasized that it is not feasible to extend the registration period, citing adequate coverage of difficult areas.

As of May 19, 2024, 522,025 new voters had been registered, including 446,416 first-time voters aged 18-21. Males accounted for 47.21%, and females 52.79% of the total registrations. The EC aims to register 623,000 voters by the end of the exercise.

The EC also registered 813 persons with disabilities and reported 7,821 challenged cases.

Regional registration data includes: Greater Accra (74,420), North East (14,147), Upper East (20,125), Northern (47,948), Bono (20,886), Bono East (18,861), Volta (26,486), Upper West (15,652), Eastern (48,563), Central (56,141), Ahafo (10,861), Ashanti (90,480), Western North (16,225), Oti (14,844), Savannah (12,767), and Western Region (33,609).

The EC dismissed allegations by Election Watch Ghana of using “stolen” Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits, clarifying that five stolen laptops cannot be used to register voters.
