Death toll from heavy rains in Kenya rises to 228
The Interior Ministry announced on Sunday that the death toll from flooding and other consequences of the heavy rains affecting Kenya has climbed to 228 individuals.
The ongoing torrential rains, which have triggered widespread flooding and landslides throughout the nation in recent weeks, are expected to worsen in May.
According to a ministry statement, additional flooding is anticipated in “low-lying areas, riparian areas, and urban areas,” while there is a risk of landslides or mudslides in regions characterized by steep slopes, escarpments, and ravines.
The heavy downpours have caused extensive damage to residences, transportation networks, and other infrastructure across East Africa’s largest economy.
The ministry also revealed that at least 164 individuals have sustained injuries due to the adverse weather conditions, while 212,630 people have been displaced.
