Supreme Court deems payment to President, VP spouses unconstitutional

Two separate judgments by the Supreme Court have deemed unconstitutional the payment of wages to the spouses of the President and Vice President.

The cases were initiated by South Dayi Member of Parliament (MP), Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye.

These legal actions arose following controversies surrounding recommendations by the presidential emolument committee to grant wages and emoluments to the spouses of the President and Vice President.

Mr. Dafeamekpor’s suit, among other claims, sought the court’s declaration that the emoluments committee lacked the authority to recommend or approve salaries or emoluments for the First and Second Ladies.

Conversely, Mr. Abronye’s suit aimed for the court to declare Parliament’s approval of salaries for the First and Second Ladies as incompatible with Article 71 of the 1992 constitution.

In unanimous decisions, the apex court upheld the claims seeking to declare the approvals and subsequent payments of salaries and emoluments to the First and Second Ladies as unconstitutional.
