Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), emphasizes that the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is long overdue, echoing numerous previous calls for privatization, especially in light of recent frequent power outages.

During an interview on Monday, Amoasi revealed that a previous attempt at privatization was unsuccessful.

He highlighted the significant losses of over 30% experienced by ECG from the power it receives from Ghana Grid Company (GRDCo), ultimately borne by consumers.

Amoasi pointed out various challenges in the power sector, including a lack of investment in distribution infrastructure and difficulties in bill collection.

He stressed the necessity of determining the desired privatization model to effectively strategize and achieve goals.

He underscored the potential benefits of private sector involvement, citing their access to capital markets, competence, and efficiency in driving innovation and operational effectiveness within ECG.
